Lent, Day 20 – Ask God to be with you.

Today’s message comes from Mike Barnett.

Psalm 121

1 I lift up my eyes to the mountains—
where does my help come from?
2 My help comes from the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth.

3 He will not let your foot slip—
he who watches over you will not slumber;
4 indeed, he who watches over Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.

5 The Lord watches over you—
the Lord is your shade at your right hand;
6 the sun will not harm you by day,
nor the moon by night.

7 The Lord will keep you from all harm—
he will watch over your life;
8 the Lord will watch over your coming and going
both now and forevermore.

This is one of my favourite psalms.  It encourages us to lift our eyes towards heaven and to depend on God for absolutely everything.   Remember, when we pray the Lord’s Prayer, our first line is: “Our Father, who art in heaven”.  And Jesus often looked up towards heaven to speak to His Father, two pieces of scripture that come to mind are: (John 11:41) & (John 17:1)

And the psalmist asks, “where does my help come from?”, and verse 2 answers that question, “from the LORD the Maker of heaven and earth”.

The rest of the psalm goes on to confirm that whatever trials, hardships or suffering that we may have to endure, our loving Father is always waiting for you to ask Him for His help, and guess what, He is always more than willing to provide that help!

At times, I actually find it hard to comprehend, that this God, is the same God that created the heavens and the earth, the same God who accepts us, sinners, as his adopted children when we commit ourselves to following Jesus Christ and this is the same loving, caring and compassionate God who walks with us, hand-in-hand, through all our hard times and through all our good times. This is the amazing God that is more than willing to provide help when we call upon Him!

David in Psalm 86:5 says, “You, Lord, are forgiving and good, abounding in love to all who call to you”.  And David knew that when he was in distress and called to God, God would answer him! (v7)

We should never ever place our trust in; or rely on anyone or anything other than God! Why? Because there is absolutely nothing that can sustain us, other than our Father God!

And this truth is so crucial to understand, considering the current circumstances and challenging times that we and the world find ourselves in, with covid-19.  We need to lift our eyes towards heaven and ask for God’s help, because He is the only one who can guide us in the fight against this evil virus.

Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.”(Psalm 55:22)

Ask God to be with you, not just today but every day, and ask Him to guide you and help you to live your life through His sustaining strength!! Conleth

May God bless you and keep you all safe. And may the love of God be a comfort to you.
